

The Zerg species is a race completely different from the Protoss or the Terrans. They are a collective of mutations of many different races all intergrated into the Zerg Swarm through 'infestation'. The Zerg will then evolve these 'infested' creatures into deadly and dangerous killers to serve the Zerg in their quest of ultimate and absolute domination. The Zerg, we might say, are uncivilised in that they do not use technology to create their weapons, armour or vehicles and ships. Instead, these are created via biological adaptation and planned mutation of Zerg DNA. Everything, even Zerg buildings are in fact grown organs within the living, growing organism of a zerg nest.
When the Protoss first encountered the Zerg, they noticed that the Zerg were unified absolute obedience to the directives from the Zerg 'Overmind'. This Overmind controlled and directed the actions of every Zerg creature in the Swarm, being passed on through a hierachy of 'lesser' beings. The first and most important tier of this is the 'celebrates'. Each given direct control of a seizable section of the Swarm. The Celebrates' commands were then passed on through the overlords - who directly ordered and controlled the Zerg creatures (both in nest and on the battlefield). After the assimilation of Sarah Kerrigan into the Overmind, and the invasion of Aiur - Kerrigan, or the Queen of Blades came to now dominate the Zerg Swarm.
